Bio-fuels Waisoi Project Fiji Q3 2011
Golders Associates commissioned Joe Mifsud and the University of the South Pacific to undertake a study on the potential of establishing a bio-fuel business for the Namosi Joint Venture (NJV) Copper Gold Mine Project in Fiji. NJV the operator of the proposed Waisoi Project is keen to implement sustainable principals wherever possible. The Bio-fuel will supplement heavy fuel oil (HFO) for the 75MW power plant and diesel for a fleet of mine vehicles.
Phase 1 of the study was completed on the 21st of September: coconut oil and coconut dimethyl esters are likely to provide an excellent cost effective starting base for HFO and diesel supplements respectively, with minor infrastructure support. The study also identified Pongamia and Jatropha as potential future crops, these are currently being trialed by the Fijian Government and private enterprise.
